Flag China Cargo UAVs are no longer limited to small electric quadcopters dropping off yor Amazon parcels in adverts. They are evolving into full-scale transport aircraft. The concept of uncrewed cargo planes is compelling, and the world is warming up to them. While numerous designs have been proposed, many remain conceptual, confined to presentations rather than production.

China, however, is clearly moving ahead of the West in this space, with a growing number of large uncrewed cargo aircraft already flown. Several have even completed their maiden flights in recent months.

Not all of these Chinese projects will succeed, some will be abandoned, overtaken by more advanced designs, or fail to attract sufficient orders. Yet others may go on to play a significant role in the future of air logistics. This article aims to highlight the sheer scale and momentum of cargo UAV development in China.

Changying-8 (CY-8)

The stealthily-lined Norinco Changying-8 is one of the latest, and most photogenic, uncrewed cargo design, making its maiden flight on March 31st 2026, in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. Reported payload is over 3,500 kg and range of over 3,000 km.

The engines are on an unusual podded arrangement. It is unclear how material the type’s stealthy-looking tail will be to survivability. It does however at least imply a military role.

HH200

The HH200, an improvement over the preceding HH100, made its maiden flight on 16th April 2026 less than 2 years after the earlier type. It has been developed by Xi’an Aircraft Industry Group (XAC), part of Chinese aviation giant AVIC. Layout is similar to the HH100 with high-wing twin-boom and twin turboprop engines. Its cargo capacity is 12 - 18 m3 and range of up to 2,360 km.

TP1000

Developed by Yitong UAV System Co, the TP1000 maid its maiden flight on April 15th 2025 at Qingdao, Shandong Province. Payload is reportedly over 1,000 kg and range 1,000 km (hence the ‘1000’ in the designation). The cargo hold is over 7 m3. Layout is similar to popular twin-prop transports such as the Harbin Y-12. Reportedly it has already received over 30 orders from companies such as ZTO Express and Asian Express Aviation.

New Tengden cargo drone

A more conventional design that Tengden Sci-Tech Innovation’s earlier Scorpion-D, this unnamed type first flew on August 11th 2024. It is larger than most with a 16.1 m wingspan and 13.9 m length. Reported payload is 2,000 kg, which is greater than the same company’s earlier 4-engine Scorpion-D. Cargo space 12 m3, range 2,000 km. Altitude is reported as 7,000m.
